The Language of Landscape: Nature, Art, Imagination

When we see, feel, and think of nature, it is never just an objective encounter with an outside world. Landscapes are intimately tied to our experiences, infused with meanings like a complex language, spoken and written in land, and water. The towering presence of mountains can evoke awe and a sense of permanence, while the endless expanse of the ocean might elicit feelings of mystery or exploration. Landscapes mean home, retreat, freedom, resilience, and even pain or healing. The Hudson River, too, has inspired artists, writers, and thinkers throughout history. This talk explores how the Hudson River Valley has been transformed into works of art and literature, from the 19th-century Hudson River School to contemporary creators. We will trace how this landscape has shaped the American imagination and played a crucial role in defining the nation's emerging identity in the years following its independence.
